The most powerful MBB interview question you can ask
It wasn't about the team. It wasn't about the promotion path. It was:
"What type of people usually do well here?"
Most candidates wait until the end of the interview to ask questions.
The best candidates start gathering information from the first minute. Think about it.
If the interviewer tells you:
• We hire people who are highly entrepreneurial.
• We value candidates who influence without authority.
• Our top performers are exceptionally coachable.
• We look for people who thrive in ambiguity.
Then you've just been given the answer key. For the rest of the interview, you can bring examples that demonstrate exactly those qualities.
Not because you're manipulating the interview. Because you're helping the interviewer connect the dots.
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is telling random stories they've memorized.
Strong candidates tell stories that answer the interviewer's question. The strongest candidates first figure out what the interviewer is looking for. Then they show evidence that they have it.
The same principle applies far beyond consulting. Every interviewer is trying to answer a single question:
"Would this person succeed here?"
The earlier you understand what success looks like, the easier it becomes to demonstrate that you're a match.
Most candidates spend the interview trying to impress.
The best candidates spend the interview trying to understand.
Ironically, those are usually the candidates who end up getting the offer.
I work with a small number of candidates each month to keep coaching highly personalized. If you're serious about landing an offer at McKinsey, BCG or Bain and interested in working together, feel free to reach out for a free introductory call.
